State Government says get the frack out of Peel region

Jill BurgessMandurah Coastal Times

THE State Government has implemented its ban on hydraulic fracture stimulation (fracking) for existing and future petroleum titles in Peel, the South West and Perth metropolitan regions.

It has also placed a moratorium on the use of fracking throughout the rest of WA.

The ban and moratorium prohibits companies from using fracking during exploration or production.

The Government will establish an independent scientific inquiry chaired by Environmental Protection Authority chairman Tom Hatton to decide the future of fracking in WA.

The inquiry will use scientific and historical evidence to identify impacts and potential risks to the environment, health, agriculture, heritage and the community.

Mandurah MLA David Templeman said the Government was delivering on its election promise to ban fracking.

“We are also delivering on our commitment to hold a public enquiry into fracking,’’ he said.

The community can provide written submissions and attend a meeting in Perth, Geraldton or visit https://frackinginquiry.wa.gov.au/.
