Monique Earl is 28 weeks pregnant and on her 20-week scan discovered her baby has a congenital heart defect.

He suffers from transposition of the great arteries, where the pulmonary artery and aorta are switched.

‘While pregnant, we are fine and he is developing normally,’ Mrs Earl said.

‘The complications arise once he is born and his heart cannot pump oxygenated blood to the rest of his body.

‘Initially, he will have stents and shunts inserted into his heart immediately post-birth to stabilise him for a few days.

‘Then around day four he’ll undergo an arterial switch operation.’

The Government will cover the cost of flights for Mrs Earl and her husband James. They also hope the Government will cover the costs for their two sons aged two and five.

‘Grandparents will need to fly to Melbourne to help out with the boys and naturally to be there to offer support and comfort to us during what will be a challenging time,’ she said.

‘Their flights and accommodation are up to us to fund.’

The family are holding a variety of fundraisers. Visit Our Special Bearly (baby Earl) on Facebook.
