THE City of Mandurah Junior Council graduated this week.

The council consists of 38 year 6 students from the 10 primary schools across Mandurah and each year chooses one topic to focus on.

This year, the students focused on animal advocacy to help create awareness and encourage people to better treat their animals.

The council was concerned about the unfairness of animals being mistreated and disrespected by owners due to a lack of knowledge or understanding of the amount of care animals need.

Other important topics junior councillors came up with included drugs and alcohol, the environment, mental health, bullying and disengaged youth.

The junior council is a way of providing opportunities for students to learn about governance and democracy, with a focus on local government, contributing to the community and developing leadership skills in young people.
