MADORA Bay resident Christie McGarrity, a Year 9 Mandurah Baptist College student, is set to blossom in the musical The Secret Garden at Melville Theatre.

The musical is based on the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett and tells the story of 10-year old Mary Lennox (McGarrity), orphaned while living in India and returning to England to live with her embittered uncle Archibald who she has never met.

He is a recluse, tormented by insecurities over his physical impairments and haunted by dreams of his late wife.

Mary is befriended by the manor staff who encourage her to find solace in the gardens that need attention.

Involved in theatre for eight years, McGarrity (14) has appeared in more than 15 shows with Mandurah Little Theatre, Primadonna Productions and Mandurah Baptist College.

She has been a support act for Mental as Anything, Boom Crash Opera, Pseudo Echo and Jon Stevens, shared a stage with Lucy Durack, Todd McKenney and Rhonda Burchmore and twice been nominated for best youth in a musical at the annual Finley Awards for roles in Annie and Shrek Junior.

The Secret Garden is on June 30 and July 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 with a matinee on July 9.

Tickets $25 and $20 concession from 93304565 or www.meltheco.org.au.
