The Four Way Test was conceived in 1932 at the height of the Depression by a Chicago Rotarian who later became president of Rotary International.

Its aim is to promote to young people the ideals and ethical values of Rotary, encouraging and fostering excellence in the art of public speaking, developing confidence and self-esteem in the young participants.
