PEEL branch of the Veteran Car Club of WA celebrates its 40th anniversary next month.
The then Murray Districts Section of the Veteran Car Club of WA was formed in May 1977 when a group of old car enthusiasts met at the Pinjarra home of Roger and Marie May.
There are now about 100 members with about 200 cars between them.
“When we display the cars, as we did at the recent Pinjarra Festival, there is always a huge amount of interest,’’ club president David Munro said.
“And we get people saying ‘I’ve got a bit of my grandad’s car in the shed – is anyone interested?’
“Of course, all bits and pieces are welcome because we have a huge range of cars and the main club has a big shed in Forrestfield, where members buy spare parts.”
Member Jim Mather said age was catching up with many members who found it difficult getting in and out of old vehicles.
“Our cars are meant to be used, not locked away but current road conditions can make it hazardous,’’ he said.
“We generally travel on back roads or in quiet periods but sometimes we do have to navigate main roads, so we try to cause the least amount of disruption.”
The club meets at Golden Bay Coastal Community Centre on the third Sunday of every other month at 2pm.
Any memorabilia would be welcome at the anniversary celebrations.
