Volunteers needed for citizen science possum tally

THE critically endangered Western Ringtail Possum will be under the microscope throughout September and October with an official count to take place.

Wirambi Landcare will be coordinating the Citizen Science Tally of the possums and their habitat alongside the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

Organisers want as many people involved in the count as possible in the Peel/Yalgorup region.

Western Ringtail Possums are only found in South-West WA and are under threat by habitat destruction, a rise in predators such as feral cats and foxes and road traffic.

Wirambi Landcare’s head of landcare research supervisor Jason Bird said volunteers were needed in the Peel region to gather information to gain a better understanding of the species.

Alongside the Tally, Wirambi Landcare will also be helping the possums by monitoring the species and their food sources as well as working alongside wildlife rehabilitators to identify suitable release sites.

The Citizen Science Tally will take place from September 18 to October 18 with a free information session being held at Falcon E-Library on September 14 from 10am to 12pm.
