THIRTY-two people assembled 600 birthing kits when the Zonta Club of Peel held a recent birthing kit workshop at Make Place, Mandurah.
The kits cost $3 each and are sent through the Birthday Kit Foundation to developing countries where they can save the lives of many mothers and babies.
Since 2005, the Zonta Club of Peel has held about one workshop a year, at first assembling 1000 birthing kits, later reduced to 600 due to the rising cost from 70c to $3 for each kit.
That equates to about `15,000 kits at a cost of nearly $18,000.
Most has been raised from the hard work of members with some individual donations, including a recent one from Rotary.
More than $500,000 women die each year as a result of childbirth, with 99 per cent from developing countries.
