Future fears

In an address last year to the Institute of Economic Affairs in London, Opposition Treasurer Joe Hockey started by saying “This is the end of an era of popular entitlements”.

He stated that to build infrastructure, public education and health for growth was a public sector equivalent of much-maligned Ponzi schemes.

What he overlooks is that the sovereign debt problems we are seeing in Europe and the United States are the outcome of corporate greed, not the entitlement to workers who have fought two world wars and then given their lives to their families and country.

Joe Hockey is saying that welfare such as Centrelink, university education for the less fortunate and Medicare is a result of weak government,

We are witnessing riots in the streets of Europe over austerity measures that are creating unemployment and despair.

Here in Australia we have low GST, low inflation, low interest rates, low unemployment, an AAA rating and the lowest deficit in the Western world.

We fear that when Tony Abbott becomes Prime Minister we will be heading the same way as Europe.
