Squatters’ ideal

Staff ReporterMandurah Coastal Times

The problem has been around for ages and extends beyond putting a roof over someone’s head.

Mandurah’s high number of derelict houses close to the CBD and social services makes it a destination for squatters.

I believe the city council is part of the problem because if a house is unfit for human habitation the owners can be compelled by council to repair or demolish.

The council levies rates on derelict houses while there is no inspection program in place.

Council has a responsibility to the wider community. If a house is good enough on which to levy rates it should be good enough to live in.
