They’re weeds, not wildflowers

MUCH as it is good to read of people receiving prizes for appealing, colourful photographs, it is disheartening to read the flowers in the photograph on page 12 of your October 5 edition being described as “wildflowers”.

The flowers depicted are not native, they originate from South Africa and are a pest and nuisance weed in many areas of natural bushland, including along our coast.

Their colour and brightness is indisputable, but they displace our native groundcovers and shrubs to the detriment of our local flora and fauna.
