DAWESVILLE resident Deian Roberts is one of three Mandurah athletes who were handpicked to represent WA in the 2018 State Schoolboys AFL 12 years and under team.

Silver Sands resident Ryan Bizzell and Meadow Springs resident Blake Russell were also chosen to represent the state team.

Along with 25 other boys, Roberts’ dream of becoming an AFL player is one step closer after beating off fierce completion from a field of more than 500 players state-wide.

The Falcon Primary School student said he was looking forward to the experience.

“It was a goal for 2018 and I felt accomplished and happy with myself that I made the team,” he said.

WA State 12s coach Michael Barton said while it was early days, Roberts was certainly a developing player.

“He’s a fine young footballer who shows a lot of potential in his age group. His attack on the footy is fantastic and his ball use is good. I just hope he continues to take it further,” he said.

Deian’s family are equally proud of his achievements and father Aaron, a former rugby player, said he was happy that his son made the team.

“There’s a lot of amazing talent in the Peel region so we were stoked that Deian was chosen,” he said.

The WA State 12s Team will head to Canberra in August to compete in the School Sport Australia National AFL Championships.
