Games athletes compete with gusto

Seven sports events were held in Pinjarra, while athletics and tenpin bowling were staged in Rockingham

The WA Games was the qualifying event for next year’s national competition in Melbourne, with the world cup to be held in Los Angeles in 2015.

Special Olympics Australia WA state manager Di Bruce said competitors enjoyed sports including cricket, basketball and equestrian.

‘The event empowers athletes and was an opportunity for them to challenge themselves,’ she said.

WA players representing Australia in Special Olympics soccer also honed their skills, taking part in training exercises, and skill activities at South Yunderup Oval as part of their preparation for December’s Asia Pacific Games in NSW.

Football West inclusive development officer Gordon Duus said it was the first time the sport hadbeen involved in the State Games.
