Low scores, big losses for Peel Thunder

Jessica NicoMandurah Coastal Times

PEEL Thunder had a match they’d rather forget as they went down to West Coast by 48 points on Saturday afternoon.

Inaccuracy plagued the Thunder from the beginning as they kicked just two behinds to West Coast’s 2.5 to be 15 points behind at the first break.

Improvement in the second quarter led to a more even contest as Peel finally hit the scoreboard with a major, but their 2.2 was not enough to stop the Eagles expanding their lead to 17 at halftime.

Peel’s three goals were kicked by Jackson Merrett, Haydn Matthews and Ryan Bennell, while Bailey Banfield and Taylin Duman toiled hard through the middle to pick up 24 disposals each.

After a week in the top five the loss has Peel slip back down to 6th with seven rounds to go.

The Thunder will be looking to bounce back this weekend when they travel to take on the 8th placed East Perth from 3.10pm on July 13.

In the women’s match, three scoreless quarters has led to a demolition of Peel in round 9 of the WAFLW.

Hosting the second placed East Fremantle, the Thunder got off to a strong start when Ebonee Hardie scored the only goal of the first quarter to help her team to the 7-3 lead at the break.

But from there it was all the Sharks, scoring 6.7 to nothing for the remainder of the game to secure an emphatic 46-7 win.

After nine rounds Peel sit 5th on the WAFLW ladder and will next take on ladder leaders Subiaco from 2pm, July 14 at David Grays Arena.
