MANDURAH Catholic College was crowned runner-up champion school at Trigg Beach on Friday (August 31) in the 2018 Sunsmart WA School Surfing Titles State Final.

More than 100 student surfers and bodyboarders from 27 different regional and metropolitan high schools competed for the title of WA’s Champion Surfing School for 2018.

The state final brought together the best-performing schools who qualified through 10 regional and metro qualifying events over the past two weeks.

MCC students April McPherson and Ella Golding competed in the Senior Girls Surfing section and finished runner-up, with the winning spot taken by the School of Isolated and Distance Education.

The Mandurah school also came runner-up in the Senior Boys Bodyboarding section, with students Tom Mainwaring and Henry Gibson defeated by Duncraig Senior High School.

However, MCC students were undefeated in the Junior Boys Bodyboarding section, with Kael McGowan and Dylan O’Brien edging out Max McGregor and Matt Jordi from Margaret River Senior High School.

A win on Friday (August 31) would guarantee student surfers a spot into the National Titles and the chance to compete against Australia’s best surfing schools.
