Towards the end of his training, he averaged between 20 to 40kms a week of swimming practice which involved early morning sessions before school and long ocean swims on the weekends.

Hurley was supported by skipper Des McLean, fellow MCC student Jamie Boukaseff, his brother Derek Hurley and mum Jen Hurley who travelled on a kayak alongside him on the day.

Hurley was met on Rottnest island by his Dad, Michael, and his sister Niamh.

“I’m keen to get back in the water and looking forward to swimming challenges in the future,” he said.
