Mandurah Pirates sink in season opener

A-grade needed to start well, but Rockingham burst out of the blocks and never looked back.

Bodie Etheredge was on fire for the visitors, running in five tries, while Dudley Cortland slotted five conversions as Rockingham continued its strong A-grade form on from last season.

Isaak Conley, Zachary Nicolson, Andrew Taitoko and Anton Paul all cross-ed for the home side but it was not enough to help them avoid a 45-22 defeat.

It was better news for B-grade, who claimed a commanding 24-3 victory thanks to tries from Fabian Morrell, Deon Wyatt and Jordan Kasuas.

It was a standstill early, with neither side able to put points on the board until Rockingham converted a penalty.

This seemed to stun the Pirates into action, running in three unanswered tries, getting its B-grade season off to a perfect start.

The colts also impressed with a solid 34-19 victory over the Roos.

Carl Fitzpatrick grabbed a double for the home side, while Matthew Korok, Kasuas and Paul also crossed after the Pirates’ pressure broke Rockingham early.

The colts head to Doubleview next Saturday to take on West Scarborough at 12.20pm, while A and B grade will travel to Kelmscott.
