THREE Mandurah junior bodyboarders battled strong winds and stormy seas over the weekend to place as finalists in the Sunsmart WA Bodyboard Titles 2018.

Bodyboarders from across the state competed in wet and wintry conditions along the Peel coastline on Sunday for the state final titles event.

Fourth Groyne in Silver Sands provided protection from the elements and threw up some fun and highly contestable lefthand wedges in the 2.0m range.

Mandurah resident Kael McGowan placed second in the Under-16 Cadet Boys with a total of 13.33.

Mandurah residents and brothers Andrus Joyce and Cael Joyce battled it out on the water for a place title in the Under-14 Grommet Boys.

Andrus finished with a combined total of 9.27, just stealing second place from his brother Cael who finished with a combined total of 7.93 and third place.

Cael Joyce received the Air Asia ‘Wave of the Day’ for his commitment in the testing conditions and finishing third in the Under-14 Grommet Boys division in his first attempt in the SunSmart WA Bodyboard Titles.

After a hugely successful event, attention will now shift to preparing the 21-member WA Bodyboard Team for the upcoming National Titles.

“After two great events in Margaret River and Mandurah, we congratulate our 2018 State Champions and wish our WA Bodyboard Team all the best for the National Titles in Tweed Heads, NSW,” Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks said.

“After some great individual and team results in the past, I’m sure WA bodyboarders will perform strongly once again on the national stage.”
