Mandurah student wins gold at Dutch youth regatta

FREDERICK Irwin Anglican School student Georgia Payne (16) has won a gold medal at a Dutch youth regatta.

Payne did a tackers learn-to-sail course at Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club when she was just eight years old.

She started using the World Sailing youth high- performance catamaran, a Nacra 15, in 2016.

MOFSC and the South of Perth Yacht Club provide training and support for Payne, who has hopes of a 2024 Olympic Games spot on a Nacra 17.

She is also supported by the Department of Sport and Recreation via a sailing scholarship at Mandurah Peel Regional Academy of Sport and the WA Institute of Sport.

Payne, the 2017 Mandurah Junior Sportsperson of the Year, has a gruelling schedule with training four days a week and two days a week on-water training while completing Year 11.

Her coach and local sailing coaching company JML Sailing Academy owner Mikael Lundh had two teams attend the regatta.

Payne is competing in the 2019 Nacra 15 Open World Championships in October in France.
