Pacemen set the pace, Statewide Twenty20

ROCKINGHAM-Mandurah accounted for University and Midland-Guildford at Melville’s Tompkins Park in the Statewide Twenty20 on Sunday.

Rain wreaked havoc as the games were moved from Lilac Hill on Saturday, before both matches were shortened due to conditions.

Against University, the Mariners made 5/89 from 12 overs courtesy of Dane Ugle with 25 and Brendon Diamanti with 23.

The young pacemen were superb and kept Uni at arm’s length as Leon Coombs took out the first four batsmen to end with 4/19 as Lachlan Pratt (3/22) and Joel Marion (2/4) solidified the back end of the innings.

In a 16 over afternoon match, Rockingham-Mandurah batted first and Ugle starred as he and Josh Smith put on 112 for the second wicket. Ugle smashed 59 from 45 with four sixes as stalwart Smith blazed at a strike rate of 150 with 54, studded with four boundaries and three sixes.

In pursuit of 6/126, the Swans fell 19 runs short at 7/107 as Marion (3/21 from 4 overs), Coombs (1/13 off 3 overs) and Ugle (1/22) completed fine personal days.

Despite the Mariners finishing second in their pool with two wins from three, they just missed out on moving to the knockout stages.
