Defending a meagre 176, the Mariners were put to the sword by University, thanks to centuries from Nicholas Maiolo and John Rogers.

University finished 5/375 after 104 overs at the crease, with Brendon Diamanti the pick of the bowlers for the Lark Hill outfit, claiming 3/43 off 25 overs, including 11 maidens, while Joel Marion claimed 2/47 from his 14 overs.

It was better news in the second-grade competition, with the Mariners surpassing the 234 required for first-innings points, scoring 249, with Aaron Burrage’s 87 proving pivotal.

Third grade were also victorious after half-centuries from Wesley Steele and Tony Coulson saw Rockingham-Mandurah post 224 in response to University’s first innings of 115.

Trailing by 109, the Students’ Tom Balkwill (78) ensured his side avoided outright defeat with a helping hand from John McKay.

Fourth grade battled hard, but University claimed the points despite two wickets apiece to Ronan Hogarth, Mitchell Steele and Harry Steele.

Elsewhere, U17s fell to Centurions, U15s had a stirring victory over Centurions, the U14s downed Willetton while the U13s fell jut short.

There is no respite for the seniors this weekend, with first grade taking on the table-topping Claremont-Nedlands.
