STAFF from Nic and Kolo are used to balancing plates during a busy service and they called on all their expertise after picking up a hat-trick of awards during the Catering Institute’s night of nights.

The Ardross Street cafe picked up three Gold Plate Awards, including the major prize, during the November 20 event acknowledging the work of restaurants in WA.

Also in the trophy cabinet are awards for Best Breakfast and Best Licensed Cafe Metro and Regional.

Having only opened 18 months ago, owner Ben Kon-Yu said his team was pleased to be recognised as a bright light in the suburb.

“We were really happy and quite shocked, especially after the (major award),” he said.

“There were really strong competitors. It’s just exciting.”

Nic and Kolo currently operates Tuesday to Sunday, offering coffee, all-day brunch and dinner.

Mr Kon-Yu said the venue would be expanding its offering within weeks, with a new menu to launch in December.

“We want to be ahead of the trend,” he said.
