Applecross RSL to unveil plaques on Remembrance Day

Aaron CorlettMelville Gazette

PLAQUES recognising the sacrifices of Australian service people will be unveiled at the Applecross RSL Sub Branch Hall on Remembrance Day.

The plaques were moved from the clock tower at Garden City ahead of the shopping centre’s redevelopment..

There were fears the plaques might be destroyed but a $4500 Federal Government grant allowed the Sub Branch to take possession of items from the City of Melville and move them to their new home.

Sub Branch president Craig Chapman said the timing of moving the plaques was important because it was the centenary of the Armistice that ended World War I.

“Tagney MHR Ben Morton will pull the string and unveil the plaques,” he said.

“The plaques hold so many memories so it was important that they stay in the City after being located at the clock tower for years and years.

“It’s also important that the plaques are there for future generations to look at and we’ve included a backlit light to illuminate them at night.”

Mr Chapman said Remembrance Day was important time for the public to acknowledge the service people who gave their lives for the country.

“It’s a time to say thanks to the people who kept us all safe and made this a prosperous nation,” he said.

The City of Melville and Sub Branch’s service will commence at the War Memorial in Wireless Hill Park at 10.55am before morning tea is served at 11.15am.

The plaques will be unveiled at the Sub Branch Hall at 98 Kintail Road, Applecross at 1pm before light refreshments are served at 1.20pm.
