APPLECROSS Senior High School has been named Best Poetic High School in Australia as part of the national Dorothea MacKellar Poetry Awards.

English teacher Veronica Lake said there was a long tradition of students realising they were poets while attending Applecross SHS.

“The school has a dedicated staff of English teachers who value language and its manifold implications, sounds and patterns,” she said.

“These teachers encourage students to find their poetic voices and to speak out.”

Nearly 12,000 entries were sent into this year’s Awards and Applecross SHS’s poetry was recognised as being of a consistently high quality with excellent use of language and poetic form.

One highly commended and four commended certificates were also awarded to individual students.

Applecross SHS’s English department was awarded a special trophy as well as a $1000 cheque.
