A PERTH-FIRST early childhood tutoring program is helping prepare kids for the increased demands of the Australian curriculum.

Based in Bicton and owned by experienced teacher Elizabeth Vos, Begin Bright aims to equip children with the skills they need to thrive right from the beginning of their schooling.

The program launched in Cronulla more than a decade ago and is well established on the east coast but only arrived in Perth, with Mrs Vos at the helm, late last year.

“As an early childhood teacher I have a passion for early intervention,” she said.

“I’ve experienced kids entering the school system who are anxious and nervous and sometimes the anxiety takes over and it can take a while for them to settle down.

“Changes to the Australian curriculum mean expectations have increased dramatically for the lower grades so it is easy to fall behind quickly.”

Begin Bright offers both a group-based school readiness program for children entering kindergarten or pre-primary the following year and one-on-one tutoring for kids in Year 1 to 6.

“The program delivers pre-literacy and pre-numeracy learning concepts, as well as fine motor skills but it offers more than that,” Mrs Vos said.

“Separation anxiety amongst children entering school is a major stress contributor, resulting in a negative attitude toward school.

“At Begin Bright, our lessons are one hour long, once a week. This timeframe is perfect for children to become accustomed to separating from their parents or carers and feeling less distressed and insecure.”
