“Marten recognises the job in front of him and is aware of the challenges that lie ahead and this should be seen as a vote of confidence in the City of Melville staff and the organisation itself,” he said.

“He is a consummate and true local government professional with the knowledge, experience and understanding of local government laws and legislations and is committed to the compliance requirements of the role.

In a statement, the City said it was an “extensive recruitment” process.

Mr Tieleman began his career in local government in 1982, learning the role as a relief clerk and working his way through the ranks to city accountant at the City of Perth.

He later moved on as finance controller at the City of Melville, before moving to the City of Darwin taking on the roles of finance manager and director corporate services.

Mr Tieleman then returned to the City of Melville and has remained director corporate services since 2002.

He said he was honoured to be appointed CEO and looked forward to continuing to strengthen the relationships between council and the community.

“I also have the privilege of working with a dedicated and experienced council and staff team and look forward to a supporting and constructive culture that focuses on meeting the needs of Melville residents, celebrating our successes and learning from the times where we don’t always get it right,” he said.

“I am very aware the City’s goal of working together to achieve community wellbeing, for today and tomorrow can only be achieved by doing just that – working together. This not only includes the work undertaken by the City but also our volunteer and community groups that share the same goal.”
