Police investigate fatal freeway smash

POLICE are investigating a fatal crash on the Kwinana Freeway near South Street in Bateman this morning.

Traffic was brought to a standstill after the crash happened about 8.55am when three vehicles were travelling north in the right lane.

The driver of a blue Toyota Hilux struck the back of a white Mitsubishi Outlander, causing the Outlander to hit the vehicle in front, a white Toyota Tarago.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, a woman in her 40s, suffered critical injuries in the crash and was taken by ambulance to Fiona Stanley Hospital where she died a short time later.

The other drivers and passengers involved in the crash were not injured.

Major Crash investigators would like to speak to anyone who saw the crash, or the blue Toyota Hilux, white Mitsubishi Outlander or white Toyota Tarago travelling on the freeway prior to the crash.

Motorists were urged to take another route amid heavy congestion and delays as a result of the crash, and earlier night works that had lasted into the morning.

Kwinana Freeway was reduced to a single lane northbound, with heavy congestion after Canning Highway.

Main Roads said all lanes have now reopened, with traffic flowing on the freeway.
