‘Some locals were leading us to visit their well, and Greg was mucking around with the kids and showing them how to do push-ups,’ Sonlife Africa director Josh Bond said.

‘At the same time we were talking about how local villagers in Turkana had to walk up to 30km every day just to get water, and the two ideas kind of meshed.’

Inspired by Perth’s love of outdoor fitness and generous nature, event organisers Mr Wood and Mr Bond, of Riverton, will lead the Push for Change push-up challenge on March 24 from 2.30pm at South Perth Foreshore.

With friends and family sponsoring $1 for every push-up performed and a goal of $70,000 to reach, Mr Bond said some participants had their work cut out for them.

‘I have one mate looking at more than 2000 push-ups on Sunday,’ he said.

‘As long as money comes in, I think there will be some people trying to keep going all day.’

Despite breaking his hip during a football match in May and requiring surgery in June last year, Mr Bond (28) said nothing would stop him from joining in with the push-up challenge for a worthwhile cause.

“Yeah I’m not sure how well I will go but I want to get at least a few hundred out and my aim is 500,” he said.

Not-for-profit organisation Sonlife Africa will ensure 100 per cent of proceeds go directly to drilling fresh water in northern Kenya.

‘We endeavour to learn from the local people and give them what they need,’ Mr Bond said.

‘Each well costs about $10,000 to drill, but that one well provides fresh water to over 1000 people.

‘The water is not only important for bathing, cleaning and serving crops and livestock, but will allow these young guys to nourish and grow to the capacity that Perth kids would.’

Those not very keen on push-ups or sit-ups, can take part in a yoga session with The Yoga Vine instructor Donna Buchanan from 2.30pm for $15.
