Elderly urged to lock doors and windows

Staff ReporterMelville Gazette

In recent months, nursing homes across the region including Willagee and Bicton have been targetted by thieves during the day and night.

Police said they have received reports of thieves going through unlocked door and windows while residents were in the garden or next door.

‘Last week one resident had two young women knock on her door and ask to use the toilet a couple of minutes a part. When the woman walked down to her room she caught one of the females going through her room,’ said South Metropolitan Police Crime Prevention co-ordinator Dave Whitelaw

A police Safety Advice for Seniors booklet reminds residents not to alert people they live alone, to close curtains and remove clothes from any outside lines at night and avoid leaving a spare key outside.
