For a real taste of China, take a trip down South Street

Staff ReporterMelville Gazette

Arriving at Gourmet Star in Kardinya, my dad and I warmed ourselves with Chinese tea and supped on a bubbling chicken and white wine clay pot, which reminded me of the steamboats I had enjoyed many times.

We trusted the chef with our meal choices and were not disappointed.

Fillet steak with black pepper and lemongrass, squid tentacles, steamed eggplant with pork mince, steamed mince pork dumplings and fried prawn dumplings had our palates working in overdrive.

What enthralled me most was the presentation of the food ” I could have sworn that I was back in a little ancient town called Pingyao enjoying the local delicacies.

I have not dined in a Chinese restaurant since my return to Perth that served food close to what I had experienced in Shanghai and other provincial towns .

Husband and wife team Wendy and Fung Chen opened Gourmet Star in February this year with the aim to serve authentic Chinese food, and they have done just that.

All their dumpling and dim sum meals are now $4.50 between 10.30am and 3pm weekdays and 10.30am and 5pm at weekends with new steamboat dishes coming soon.
