IT has been open for only a year, but coffee spot Grouch & Co has already put WA on the map after receiving a prestigious national award.
The inaugural Australian International Coffee Awards had more than 658 entries from both local and international roasters.
The creative husband and wife duo behind Grouch & Co won the champion espresso category with their blend Diamond Mule.
While the venue serves some of the best coffee in the country, owner Renata Taylor said Grouch & Co was more than just a run of the mill cafe.
“We’re a concept store, so we sell coffee, apparel, coffee-related products, so it’s really a contained space full of our creative outlets,” Mrs Taylor said.
“We’re super lucky to have won the award after only 12 months of roasting.
“I think it’s just a testament to how amazing our roaster – my husband Greg -is; he’s got an amazing palette and he’s very passionate.”
Mrs Taylor said Grouch & Co prided itself on ethically sourcing their coffee beans.
“We come from a big background in coffee that’s really given us an understanding when we’re buying. We always know exactly where our beans are coming from,” she said.
The winning blend had been in the works for about four months, comprised of a blend of sweet Ethiopian flavours combined with the chocolate tones of Brazilian beans.
“These beans are already amazing, but when you blend the different ones together it makes it even more delicious,” Mrs Taylor said.
