IAN Carter is welcoming a change of scenery and the chance to give back to his local community.

After 24 years as Anglicare WA’s chief executive, the Kardinya resident has replaced Richard Foster at the head of Melville Cares.

Mr Foster had a significant role with the aged care and disability services provider after serving as its chief executive for 20 years.

Mr Carter said he knew it was the right time to part ways with Anglicare and left the organisation in April

“I wasn’t sure what I was going to do, I knew I wasn’t going to retire and drive myself to distraction on the weekend because I want to do stuff,” he said.

“I thought about consultancy, but I like working with people who are passionate about what they are doing .

“I used to work with the State Government so for the past 40 years I had a State-wide roles and I thought ‘wouldn’t it be nice with my work in community development if I did some work in my community?’”

Part of Mr Carter’s vision for Melville Cares is to work with local businesses, fundraise more and grow their volunteer base.

“We are starting some intergenerational work with kids and that’s really interesting,” he said.

“The neighbourhood stuff like connecting people up who actually don’t live very far from each other and they can do things in their own right.

“We already know that a number of people who go on the busses actually create friendships outside Melville Cares.”

Mr Carter said he would build on the work of Mr Foster as well as developing ways to match the changing world.

“The board and I will look to develop our new strategy going forward and we’ll develop a clear and exciting vision,” he said.
