THE Leeming Bowling Club will install shade structures and lighting on its third green if the Liberal Government is re-elected in March.

Jandakot MLA Joe Francis announced the $130,000 funding pledge alongside Deputy Premier Liza Harvey on Thursday.

When first elected in 2008 Mr Francis secured $330,000 for the Leeming Bowling Club, which was used to install a synthetic bowling green.

“That created a whole new interest in the club, people actually left other bowling clubs to come to Leeming because it was one of the first to have a premium quality synthetic bowling green,” Mr Francis said.

Mrs Harvey said recreational facilities like bowling clubs were important community hubs, a sentiment echoed by Mr Francis.

“Bowling is not just now for the retired, we’ve just had a school group here doing there weekly session and Thursday night bowls is attended by mums, dads and the kids.

“It keeps people active and engaged in their community which is especially important for the elderly; community sports clubs are really the life blood of society.”

Leeming Bowling Club president Colin McCavana said the club was bucking a statewide trend by increasing membership and needed a fully functional third green.

“We put in the third green because we had a surplus of players in the club on some days and could not accommodate them all.

“We used our own resources to build the third synthetic green but we weren’t able to install the shades and the lighting, which will allow us to use all three greens at night time.”
