VODAFONE has been given permission to build a new telecommunications tower at Beasley Reserve in Leeming, despite councillor June Barton expressing grave concerns about the proposal.
Cr Barton forced the item to a vote, stating she could not support a new mobile tower in Leeming when “the jury is still out on the health risks of high-impact towers”.
She also flagged concerns the presence of a mobile tower would devalue nearby properties and expressed a preference for a network of low-impact, smaller devices to address coverage issues in the area.
Councillor Patricia Phelan said there had been intense discussion around the placement of the tower and that it did not impact directly on homes.
Council voted 11-1 to endorse the proposal, with Cr Barton the lone vote against.
