Man charged after allegedly pulling gun at social basketball game

AN Attadale man has been arrested after allegedly becoming angry at a social basketball referee’s decision-making and pulling a gun at Melville Recreation Centre.

The incident occurred on Monday night when the 38-year-old man was taking part in a social basketball competition with friends.

After losing his temper during the game, police allege the man stormed out of the centre and retrieved a handgun from his car.

He concealed the weapon underneath his jumper but was stopped from re-entering the centre by friends.

Witnesses who allegedly saw the man holding the gun contacted police and the man’s home was raided yesterday after Fremantle detectives reviewed CCTV vision of the carpark.

Police will allege they discovered an unlicensed 9mm handgun at the man’s Attadale home.

He has been charged with being armed in a way that may cause fear and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The man was released on bail and is due to appear before Fremantle Magistrates Court on Monday, June 26.
