A MAN believed to be a jewellery store thief has been taken to hospital after trying to escape from police custody this morning.

Police attempted to take two people into custody when an incident occurred at 11.10am near Canning Beach Road and Kintail Road in Applecross.

A man tried to leave the area on a pushbike but was struck by a civilian car.

He received minor injuries and has been taken to hospital for assessment.

Police said the 27-year-old man was believed to be the person wanted by Joondalup Detectives to assist in their inquiries into a spate of jewellery store thefts across the northern suburbs.

He is now assisting police with their inquiries into the series of stealing incidents.

High-value items, primarily gold chains, rings and bracelets, were stolen from five jewellery stores in the past eight weeks.

Police are still looking for a woman who left the area on foot.

She is described as fair skinned, blonde hair and was seen wearing a black hooded jumper and black trousers.
