LOCAL Year 7 students rocketed Melville Senior High School to first place in Word Mania, a competition featuring 3000 Australian and New Zealand schools.

The annual contest, run by LiteracyPlanet, is based on a digital word building exercise where players have three minutes to create as many words as they can from a board of randomly generated letters.

Melville SHS topped their year group with a score of 276,306, finishing ahead of South Australia’s Balaklava Primary School (272,093) and Rockingham’s Kolbe Catholic College (226,294).

Melville SHS’s Year 8s also performed well, finishing third behind New South Wales school Penrith Christian College in first and Queensland’s second-placed finisher Ferny Grove State High School.

The school’s prizes include trophies, educational software licenses, a 3D printer, an EZ Robot and vouchers to spend on school resources.

More than 400,000 students from 3000 schools in Australia and New Zealand took part.
