FOUR young stars from the Murdoch University Melville Football Club (MUM FC) have impressed during a tour of China.

Booragoon resident Samuel Cook, Hilton’s Lukas Debnam, Melville’s Zac Harris-Walker and North Lake boy Joseph Teixeira were in the Football West State Under 15 team, which went to Shanghai to play in the Jinshan Cup International Youth Football Championship.

During the trip, from August 21 to September 2, the boys drew against India 1-1, lost to Czech Republic side Slavia Prague 4-0, drew with one Chinese national side 1-1 and beat the other 2-1.

Football development officer and State Under 15 coach Garry Church said he was fortunate to know the players as he was previously a coach at MUM FC.

“I’ve coached them all for about three or four years and they’ve blossomed into really good players,” he said.

“They are very coachable as well, which makes my job easier.

“I knew the boys were quality people as well as players and you need that kind of blend on a tour like we had.

“It was a real professional environment, the boys were nervous because they were playing against teams from different cultures, who play different styles of football.

“The players were exceptional, we only had five training sessions to prepare for the tournament but they played very well.”
