A PROFESSOR from Murdoch University will lead an international research team re-tracing the steps of an expedition that occurred more than 50 years ago.

Professor Lynnath Beckley and her team will spend 32 days aboard the CSIRO vessel RV Investigator, travelling about 300km offshore along the length of the WA coast.

Researchers will follow a course mapped out by the International Indian Ocean Expedition (IIOE) in the 1960s.

Prior to the first expedition, the Indian Ocean was considered a great unknown and an area that would benefit from intense observation.

“IIOE was the first large collaborative research program undertaken on a grand basin-wide scale in the Indian Ocean,” Prof Beckley said.

“The baseline scientific information gathered under IIOE is still of significant relevance today, and new technology will give us an entirely different perspective on ocean ecosystems.”
