Outrage after tree axed

Staff ReporterMelville Gazette

The City of Melville said that some time between May 24 and 27, the large eucalyptus tree was hacked with an axe and broken in half.

The damage occurred just weeks after a statue was vandalised and stolen at another City reserve, Wireless Hill, in Ardross.

A spokeswoman said the City had been focusing its designing out crime program in the Peter Ellis Park area over the past couple of years, which had resulted in a large reduction in crime in the area.

Leeming resident Rob Taddeo said he was sickened to wake up to see the mature eucalyptus tree hacked in his local park. ‘It was hacked and felled by mindless vandals’
