Palmyra Primary School students shocked by ‘meteorite landing’

STUDENTS were amazed by a meteorite that “landed” on the Palmyra Primary School grounds today.

Although the landing was staged and the meteorite was made of foam, the pupils learned some valuable skills as part of National Science Week.

School science coordinator and pre-primary teacher Jessica Arthur said she wanted to ignite the children’s imagination.

“I’ve seen a similar project done at other schools and we wanted to the kids to use their imaginations as well as some scientific questions about how it got there,” she said.

“We are hoping to stimulate some writing as next week is Book Week and we want to create a link between English and science.”

Mrs Arthur said the project linked to the Perseids, which is a meteor shower that can be seen in August.

“The construction of the meteorite took past last term with parent Jess Spaven helping put it together with Expanda Foam, wired mesh and dry ice,” she said.

“The kids were so excited about the meteorite and they asked so many questions, although there was a healthy level of scepticism which is good.

“Various classes are taking part in lessons around the meteorite, including my pre-primary students, who are creating models and drawings.”
