SAVE Beeliar Wetlands (SBW) deputy-convenor Felicity McGeorge will carry her 20-year push to protect urban bushland into her campaign as Greens candidate for the seat of Willagee.

A mother of four, Dr McGeorge said her activism for the protection of nature and her optimism for the future led her to The Greens.

“Fighting for our grandchildren’s legacy is not so hard, it’s the authentic me,” she said.

Dr McGeorge said the sense of connection to the land and respect for the environment she had learned from her father as a child set her in good stead to take the lead in a community campaign against Roe 8.

Since being named the first SBW convenor eight years ago, Dr McGeorge has added knowledge of road building, freight transport strategies and the political sphere to her avid love of nature.

“From little things, big things grow and now thousands of people are supporting the campaign in a myriad of ways,” Dr McGeorge said.

“Now, despite exploring every possible avenue available to us, our precious wetlands face imminent destruction.

“It breaks my heart more than I can explain that by the time you read this a swathe of destruction may have been cut through the North Lake Reserve causing unfathomable damage to the most complex suite of wetlands on the Swan Coastal Plain.”
