Three women honoured for their decades of volunteer service

MARY Livesey (87) was among three local women honoured for more than 25 years of volunteer service to the WA community.

“I have been a volunteer with the Art Gallery of WA for 29 years,” the Applecross resident said.

“I had a background in art and completed my Master in Art while I was volunteering at the gallery, finishing in 2002.”

“We take around children and adults and you have to do a lot of research.”

She hopes to continue her involvement with the gallery by recording little lectures, now that her health prevents her from conducting tours.

Eunice Cousins, of Mt Pleasant was recognised for 28 years of service to the Art Gallery.

“It is most satisfying occupation to be a guide,” she said.

“I feel we are teaching the young something that will give them pleasure throughout their whole life. We tend to try to stimulate school children to be interested in the arts.”

She is now retired from the gallery, also due to health reasons.

Denise Aitken, of Applecross, joined the Court Welfare Service in 1991.

She has volunteered on a weekly basis in the Perth Magistrates Court as a team member providing personal support and welfare to vulnerable defendants and their families accessing the Legal Aid duty lawyer service.
