THE South West Group (SWG) has a new director following the appointment of Tom Griffiths.

Mr Griffiths will commence in the role on June 5 following five years as the City of Fremantle’s manager of economic development, property and marketing.

He brings with him a master’s degree in sustainable urban and regional development from Murdoch University and a bachelor’s degree in business and marketing from Curtin University.

SWG chair and Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said those qualifications, together with his experience in the government and private sectors, meant he was well placed to manage the variety of things that will come across his desk.

“The south-west corridor is expected to see significant economic development and infrastructure investment over the next twenty years but this brings with it the challenge to both promote private sector investment as well as maintain regional amenity in the face of this strong growth,” Mr Aubrey said.

“Tom’s extensive experience in economic development and marketing at the cities of Fremantle and Perth position him well to play a key role in the future of our region.”

The position became available after Mick McCarthy was chosen by the City of Melville to fill its technical services director role last November.

Mr McCarthy had been SWG director for six years.

The SWG is a voluntary organisation of member councils including the cities of Cockburn, Kwinana, Melville, Fremantle and Rockingham and the Town of East Fremantle.

It works with State and Federal Government, industry, business and the community on projects that further economic development in the south west metropolitan region.
