Bryce LuffMelville Gazette

IF there is a secret to a long-lasting friendship, then this Willagee pair has surely found it.

Bonnie Edgar (99) and Lil Bond (98) have been best pals ever since meeting as six-year-olds at East Fremantle Primary School, and now live down the corridor from each other at Braemar Presbyterian Care’s Cooinda facility.

Bonnie and Lil were inseparable as teenagers, enjoying swimming, tennis and dancing.

They also worked together at Ezywalkins, a former shoe company opposite the Fremantle Town Hall.

“We had great times together on holiday, at dances and also working together,” said Bonnie.

“We have so many memories and have always been there for each other in good times and in bad.

“I don’t think either of us could have imagined still being friends at 99 and 98 years old, it’s just wonderful to still have each other.”

Lil said the friendship thrived because they lived so close and saw each other all the time.

“We couldn’t help but be friends,” she said.

“We had more tolerance back then than people do now so we always made up again after a disagreement.”Lil described her pal as “a little bit bossy” but said they were never far apart at any point in their 93-year friendship.

“Because I’m still mobile, every night I walk the 50 metres down the corridor to say goodnight to Bon and each morning I check on my dear friend,” she said.

“We’re still very close and have a very special friendship.”
