They are based close to each other in Murdoch and the teams met recently to catch up over cake thanks to a generous donation from a member of the community.

Representatives from the emergency department, mental health unit and the security team welcomed officers from Murdoch police at the get-together.

Acute care nurse director Tim Leen said a good working relationship between the local police and the ED staff was important due to the interdependencies between them.

Our staff rely on the Murdoch police in serious situations to help co-manage patients that could present to our emergency department and mental health unit, he said.

Having a strong relationship between the services gives those on the ground more visibility and even advanced warning of incoming patients. This is essential for the clinical teams to identify suitable treatment pathways, including mental health options.
