WHEN mums at Yidarra Catholic Primary School were asked how they wanted to celebrate Mother’s Day, there were no high teas or cake stalls planned.

Instead, a group of volunteers led by Indra Tomic and Laura Bell-Ocejo were tasked with creating Tough Mother, an epic obstacle course constructed on the school oval last weekend.

“We just wanted to do something to recognise the mums and make it a fun event for both mums and their children, creating lasting memories for all involved,” Mrs Tomic said.

Drawing on inspiration from the gruelling Tough Mudder, the obstacle course included a commando crawl, tunnel of terror, slippery slide, mud pool, walk-the-plank, hay bale climb, pallet hill and a foam finish.

More than 270 participants took part – ranging in age from two to 65 – with several families represented by three generations.

Mrs Tomic said some Yidarra Catholic mums would be nursing bumps and bruises in the lead-up to actual Mother’s Day this weekend but that the event had definitely been worth it.
