Better conditions needed in Asian meat works

IN REPLY to Wilson Tuckey’s response to my letter in the July 19 edition, I am wondering why after all these years of live exports, animal crushers have yet to be installed in Asian meat works.

The recent TV footage in an abattoir also revealed slippery, excrement-covered floors, contaminated water and the animals’ knees torn to the bone in attempts to get up from the floor, and one animal lying dead.

Surely, stun guns would be better than a sledgehammer.

A vet regarding this footage also stated (and I accept her professional credibility) that, as we were guaranteed, a vet would accompany each vessel.

This is not occurring.

It must have taken a great deal of courage for her to speak out. Her employment was terminated.

The report stated we were still using the same trucks and vessels hence nothing much has changed.

Were a private farmer responsible for the shocking contents in the footage, authorities would be laying severe charges.

As I mentioned in my previous letter, New Zealand ceased live exporting more than a decade ago. The New Zealanders process the meat into smaller cuts as you would find in the supermarkets and export it frozen.

We should follow their example.

Animal advocacy groups have been calling for a ban on live exports for years.

This ban must also include our greyhounds, which are exported and cruelly slaughtered should they fail to perform successfully on the racetrack.
