Opinion: Consider benefits of Roe 8 and Perth Freight Link

IN his letter in last week’s edition, Louis De Villiers asked “What has this democracy come to?”

Before Louis asks such a question, I suggest he learn a bit about what democracy is and is not in the first place.

Democracy is not what occurs when a vocal minority heavily stacked with opponents to a particular issue try to bully the relevant governing bodies (e.g. local government authority or State Government) into abandoning a project that is expected to bring benefits to the majority.

Whilst the governing bodies may take note of any conclusion or motion emanating from meetings called to oppose the Roe 8 and Perth Freight Link projects, they should not feel compelled by such opinions, as they are not a representative view of the whole community, whatever size that community may be.
