Opinion: Australia’s refugee shame

Australia should be ashamed of the way it is treating refugees on Manus and Nauru.
Australia should be ashamed of the way it is treating refugees on Manus and Nauru.

Australia should hang its head in shame for the treatment of refugees on Manus and Nauru.

The inhumane action against desperate refugees, fleeing by whatever means possible to Australia, by past and current governments is a gross violation of human rights.

Is it not ironic that both the Liberal and the Labor Party, and especially their conservative wings, that profess to have a Christian basis, so flagrantly violate their Christian principles:

“Verily I say unto you, since you have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” (Matt. 24:40).

These hypocrites should heed the judgement in the next verse: “Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” (Matt. 24:41).

It’s time that Australia jettisoned this current colonial disposition by becoming an independent republic, with due recognition of our Aboriginal heritage as well as colonial convicts and the subsequent migrants who arrived here for a better life.

It’s time that Australia adopted a proper Bill of Rights for all.
